Independent expert whose role is to provide guidance and advice to the Technical Committees (TC), Subcommittees (SC) and Working Groups (WG) preparing draft European Standards intended to support New Approach Directives (i.e. ENs for citation in the Official Journal), at the earliest possible stage and throughout the development process.
The New Approach Consultant also assesses the compliance of draft Harmonized Standards with the requirements of the piece of EU legislation they aim to cover and of the relevant standardization request.
2 REPORTS TO
The Director General
3.1 Provides guidance to Technical Committees on their work programmes in relation to New Approach Directives.
3.2 Checks regularly whether the draft standards being developed by a TC provide an answer to the terms of the standardization request.
3.3 Facilitates the standard drafters’ understanding of the Essential Requirements (ERs) of the Directive concerned.
3.4 Checks the conformity of the draft European Standard with these ERs (using any tools deemed appropriate such as a checklist providing a list of ERs and an associated list of the specified technical answers).
3.5 Monitors the added value of the content of the draft ENs compared to the ERs.
3.6 Provides comments, if any, on drafts submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
3.7 Provides indicative assessments of drafts as agreed with the Technical Committee at any time during the development process.
3.8 Provides within 28 days formal assessments to CCMC on drafts prepared for Enquiry or Formal Vote.
3.9 Provides advice to CEN and the European Commission as necessary.
3.10 Provides reports to CCMC on work carried out, work planned and any relevant issues, in line with contractual requirements.

Recruited by a selection panel, in close consultation with the European Commission and EFTA Secretariat for specific expertise.
